DAVID SHILLING 2041:
THE SHAPE OF HATS TO COME
NEWS RELEASE - 12 April 2011
HATS OFF TO THE ROYAL WEDDING
Renowned designer David Shilling’s latest headwear creation is now on show at Stockport Council’s Hat Works museum.
Inspired by the forthcoming Royal Wedding, the hat is entitled ‘David Shilling 2041 - The Shape of Hats to Come’. Shilling has imagined what wedding headwear will look like in 30 years time and created a hat to reflect that.
The futuristic headpiece, fashioned for the year 2041, is constructed from stainless steel, silver and other metal fibres with black pearls, a black diamond and plastic.
In May 2011, the wedding hat will be joined by a collection called ‘David Shilling - Racing Ahead – The Shape of Hats to Come’, to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Ascot Races.
Carol Morrison, Service Director for Communities, at Stockport Council, said: “We are delighted to be able to showcase this unique David Shilling original at Hat Works, inspired by the upcoming Royal Wedding. Hat Works is a fantastic and free local museum and I would encourage people to visit and see this new amazing Shilling creation.”
David Shilling, added: “I’m excited to once again collaborate with Hat Works. I hold the museum in high regard. It is the only one of its kind in the UK and it conveys the history as well as the future of my trade. Please come along to the museum to view this interactive solo show. Your comments and feedback can help me predict and shape the future of hats over the next 300 years.”
Shilling started his career as a milliner by creating attention-grabbing hats and outfits for his mother Gertrude’s annual Ascot appearance. Today, Shilling creates massive sculptures in steel and jewellery, as well as hats, working from his workshop in Monaco. Some of his more iconic hats feature in permanent collections of prestigious museums around the world.
Hat Works is the UK’s only museum dedicated to the hatting industry, hats and headwear.
David Shilling’s hats will be on show at Hat Works until September 2011.
Admission to Hat Works is FREE.
The museum is open Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 5pm, Sundays and Bank Holidays 11am - 5pm
